The Magic of the Extended Play
The Extended Play (EP) is a wonderful invention, offering just enough music to determine if you've found a new favorite band or if you're left craving more.
Initial Impressions
This follow-up EP opens with The Gate, a quasi-industrial-electro-punk track. It's intense, with high adrenaline, static, and deep, pained vocals from Ross Cullen, making you feel like you're dancing off a panic attack.
Delving Deeper
If you endure The Gate, you're rewarded with Claw, which feels like a sweaty, gloomy illegal rave. This infectious banger features thunderous synth and menacing guitar lines, blending dance music with punk. Cullen describes the lyrics as being about "falling in love inside your nightmare"—a cute notion.
Exploring New Sounds
Kevlar is a trip with its lack of percussion, swirling strings, reverb, and matching vocals. It’s astonishing and showcases Chalk’s ability to push boundaries in style, sound, and genre.
Final Track
The final track, Bliss, is the most conventional offering on the EP, featuring euphoric guitar, hard drums, and gorgeous counter vocals from Constance Keane, aka Fears.
